Glossary of Terms

Domain Name - Your domain name is what people will type into their browser, eg www.yourname.com

Host or Hosting Service - A web host is the company actually providing the hardware and servers where your web site is physically located. Their job is to make sure your web site is available to the World Wide Web.

Hyperlink - Is a link to another page on your site or a page on another website and is typically in blue and underlined e.g. www.bizhound.com.au 

Logo - Is an image that a company uses to identify itself by.

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation - Basically means structuring a page (and website) and its coding to maximise potential of webcrawlers (ie. Googlebot) to find and explore your web pages in order to get higher search engine rankings. No one can guarantee a number one spot in search engine results, but if done well you can get very high rankings. If you cheat with SEO you can lose your rankings and never be seen!

Subdomain - a subdomain is a domain that is part of a larger domain. For example directory.bizhound.com.au is a subdomain of bizhound.com.au and furthermore bizhound.com.au is a subdomain of .com.au etc

URL - Uniform Resource Locator is a full address made up of parts to a file on the internet such as a web page or sound file etc. The URL for this page you are reading now is http://www.bizhound.com.au/glossary.htm You could compare it to your residential home address, it is a unique address to locate you.

Webcrawler - Is a program that scours the internet analysing content of websites and storing information to provide a ranking or index to search engines (ie. Google, Yahoo, Bing etc). More info here http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-web-crawler.htm
